So we've taken some of our favorite posts from Zandland MUSIC's past and added them to our main site. But don't worry, we'll be leaving zandlandmusic.blogspot.com here and standing as an unabridged archive for all the good stuff we just simply didn't have the room to pull on over to the new domain.

We're looking at this as an opportunity to better serve our readers by fully incorporating our music-related posts and Zandland.com as a one stop shop for the 360° cultural perspective we pride ourselves in bringing to all of you.

Lady Gaga's Pop-Electro Opera | LIVE MUSIC

Can we talk about something? Lady Gaga's Monster Ball tour is going to be freaking dope. I was already excited when I found out Kid Cudi is opening - now I hear the concept behind her set and I'm dying. Pop-Electro Opera!! Gaga is the queen of the gorgeous and the grotesque and this is going to be both. I absolutely cannot wait.

The tour, which has been billed as the "first ever" pop-electro opera, is "very, very forward, very, very innovative," the singer insists. And that aesthetic, she explains, has been captured in the very design of the show.

"The theatrics and story elements are in the style of an opera. Imagine if you could take the sets of an opera, which are very grand and very beautiful, and put them through a pop-electro lens," she said. "I've been thinking about ways to play with the shape of this stage and change the way that we watch things. So what I've done is I've designed a stage with Haus of Gaga that is essentially a frame with forced perspective, and the frame is put inside the stage."

Plus she's looking out for the fans by keeping ticket prices down!

"I wanted to really put together a show that would be the most beautiful, expensive-looking, delicious show, but that my fans wouldn't have to pay a ton of money to come see," she told Rolling Stone about the tour, which was originally supposed to kick off next year after she finished up her tour with 'Ye. "So we're playing a few nights in a row. I've got super loyal fans, so I feel this tremendous obligation to take care of them."

"The theme of monsters is certainly going to be an influence, as well as the theme of evolution and change. It's going to be a truly artistic experience that is going to take the form of the greatest post-apocalyptic house party that you've ever been to."

Heartless Bastards, The Mountain | ON REPEAT

Almost a year after it's release (Feb '09), we're finally falling hard for Heartless Bastards' The Mountain. Led by the androgynous vocals of Erika Wennerstrom, the small group rocks out a beautifully neo-folk/classic rock dreamland. xo.

"The Heartless Bastards' singer/songwriter/guitar player Erika Wennerstrom has conquered yet another formerly towering obstacle to her sex - Led Zeppelin - and blues/rock may never be the same. In the instrumental breakdown of the menacing rocker, "Nothing Seems the Same," her guitar breakdown recalls Jimmy Page's more ravaging moments. Vocally, her vulnerable bombast and mystical cry in the equally rumbling, "Early In The Morning" recall Robert Plant. But Zep heft and rock chick wailer are only half her bag. Massive Attack, 90's electronic music pioneers, were up constantly spinning around my CD player back in the day. Burial, 00's dubstep pioneer, has been blasting on my iPod just as frequently in the last few years. So you can imagine how excited I am to hear that the two musical behemoths are collaborating, with Burial slotted to remix several tracks on Massive Attack's latest project. In the biz world this would be proclaimed Synergy. I'm proclaiming it Awesome.

Totally loving The Generationals lately. Simply can't get enough of their fun loving retro vibe. It's certainly not unusual for the catchy track, 'When They Fight, They Fight' (below) to sneak it's way onto my iPod repeat.

iTunes Review:

"Nobody Could Change Your Mind" opens up Con Law with a peppy, Beach Boys-meets-Joe Meek brand of '60s pop, a bubbly track dotted with blaring trumpets and echoey, space-age keyboards. The distinct, shimmying rhythm of the song is punctured by an Abbey Road-era Beatlesque blast of guitar, and for a brief moment we pass from 1964 to the precipice of the '70s. Ted Joyner and Grant Widmer use a variety of keyboards, layered vocals, simple guitars and crackling percussion to make music that is perfectly in tune with today's appetites for indie pop, which doesn't necessarily mean sugary or shallow (think Death Cab for Cutie or the Shins). "Angry Charlie" has a dark melancholy woven into the airy vocal melody and handclaps, the bouyant "Exterior Street Day" is fueled by barbed, sharp-tongued lyrics, and a brooding, New Order aesthetic propels the dance-floor rhythms of "These Habits." "When They Fight," is a glorious, inspired girl--group tribute to the art of the lover's quarrel that lifts from the very best of Phil Spector and the '60s. Con Law is a revelation.

White Widow, Black Heart | NEW MUSIC / REVIEW

Zandland fave White Widow's long awaited new album, 'Black Heart' officially made it's way to the market, and iTunes on September 22, and surely gets the Zandland nod of approval. In true indie form, Ms. Widow (Carla Patullo) took to heart a completely solo approach on the 10-track album, manning all instruments, building unique sounds to hypnotizing vocals, and masterfully producing each track herself.

Fave tracks are the anthem-esque 'Warriors' and the eerie soundscape, 'Empire'. White Widow shows off her signature screaming chops by the end of 'Quitter'; her angry side generates a sort of sonic whiplash.

And in a ghostly buildup, White Widow does Stevie Nicks proud with a rendition of Nicks' previously unreleased demo, 'Lady From The Mountain.' (below)

White Widow's last full-length album, "It's My Tragedy" dropped February 2007, marking a major turn towards gritty post-punk vocals matched with raw guitar and heavy bass riffs (think PJ Harvey)...a shift from 2005's more commercially-accessible debut, "No Wood To Knock On". "Black Heart" shows a touch of the softer side of White Widow, on her fresh indie-rock journey, with a heavy-handed diaristic vulnerability that will completely fill your emo needs without ever getting stuffy or generic.

Grizzly Bear and Beach House's Victoria Legrand (also a classmate of mine at Vassar woo!) are contributing their song "Slow Life" to the Twilight Saga: New Moon Soundtrack (also woo!!!!). They're in great company as the soundtrack also includes songs from Death Cab For Cutie, The Killers, Muse, Bon Iver, OK Go and Thom Yorke (triple woo!!!) among others.

Ghostly Record's new iPhone App has an excellent/beautiful interface that has us swooning just a bit.

"I’ve been meaning to try out Ghostly Record’s new iPhone/iPod Touch app Discovery and I finally got around to it yesterday. The apps purpose it to let you sample all kinds of music from Ghostly records. They way this is by allowing you to choose your mood, based on color, and then narrowing it down by style, like organic or digital and faster or slower. From there they take care of the rest, picking songs that fit your mood and probably introducing you to some artists you may not have heard.

The design of the app beautiful and easy to ease, and best of all it’s totally free. Plus It’s great that they aren’t trying to cram their music down your throat, you’re free to skip ahead on songs and sample to your hearts delight. Cobra Starship strikes gold with Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester | MUSIC VIDEO

Cobra Starship |MTV Music

Always been a bit on the fence with Cobra Starship, but they certainly get some Zandland points for bringing in Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester for some vocals and a fun cameo in the video to their track "Good Girls Go Bad". Meester is rocking her usual great looks and sporting some fine vocals. (The track also snuck it's way into last weeks episode of Gossip Girl.) Since MTV.com added the video on June 29, "Good Girls Go Bad" has collected almost 1 million views (vs. their prior video, "Guilty Pleasure" which lost steam after about 232,000 views). Looks like little Miss Meester is a pop culture recipe for success.

The band is just now showing up in our October 2009 Zandl Group Trend Tracking Report, with mentions in 'newest music' with teen males, and 'favorite performer' amongst our young adult female panelists.

Totally loving the Royksopp song and wacky new video, 'This Must Be it' featuring Karin Dreijer (aka Fever Ray).

Fever Ray played a show here in NYC just last night and is set to play another one tonight at Webster Hall, before heading off to a trio of performances on the west coast. Rave reviews are already coming in on last night's gig and we're definitely looking forward to hear all about tonight's Webster Hall extravaganza from our very own Carla (who will be attending - yeah..i'm jealous).

Radiohead's Thom Yorke will be rocking it out with a new crew next week. His newly formed supergroup (with Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Joey Waronker, Mauro Refosco and Nigel Dorich (Radiohead producer)) will play two LA shows next week, October 4th & 5th at the Orpheum Theatre.

we don't really have a name and the set will not be very long cuz ..well ...we haven't got that much material yet!

Britney Spears' camp announced today the November release of "The Singles Collection" featuring a new song, "3", which goes to radio September 29 (assuming it doesn't 'accidentally' get leaked prior)...

The ultimate fan box set version of The Singles Collection will contain all 29 of her singles, including the new song "3." Each disc will be packaged in its own slip sleeve case with original artwork, and will include an additional b-side or a remix of the track. The collection will include a DVD featuring all of Britney's videos in chronological order. The ultimate fan box set will also include a special booklet featuring iconic images and fun facts about each track.

The standard version of The Singles Collection will contain 17 of her chart topping favorites along with the new song "3," all on one CD.

Twilight New Moon Soundtrack Going to Kill It! | SOUNDTRACK

Wow, I'm pretty excited to hear the New Moon soundtrack. Thom Yorke, Grizzly Bear, Lykke Li, the Killers, Deathcab for Cutie and a collaboration between Bon Iver and St. Vincent will all be featured. The soundtrack is out October 20th.

Pitchfork claims this tracklist confirms their Decade of Indie article; a) I think they are right and b) I didn't need the New Moon soundtrack to confirm indie rock's cultural influence -- just look at the return of skinny jeans.

Bushwick is hopping this weekend and there are TONS of live music options to be had. Here are some selections from my Weekly Culture Picks on BushwickBK:

Friday: If you're sticking to Morgantown, there's a big loft party/show on Forrest Street featuring: Doug Gillard Electric, The Library is On Fire, The Cinnamon Band and DJ jamz (check the BBK Culture Calendar for details).

Across town is hopping too: huge party/benefit at Refuge off the Halsey L for 123 Community Space. Featuring: Murdertronics, Rude Mechanical Orchestra, Radical Outing, Whack! ("infinitely danceable accordian punx"), Natti Vogel, Night Spitter NYC, DJ Tony Tantrum, 3 King Sound System and Daniel Lion-I. Wow.

Bushwick Music Studios has more bands for ya, including Gunfight! and Kittens Ablaze. Also check out their DUBWICK dubstep party on Saturday.

Barbara Mandrell, the country-pop singer who had a string of top-10 hits in the 1970s and 1980s, has become the first woman to be inducted into the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame.

I grew up listening to Barbara Mandrell (in fact, hers was the first concert I ever attended) as well as watching the Mandrell Sisters weekly on their TV show and wearing out her records that I borrowed from the library.

Sonic Youth filmed a cameo for the October 12th episode of Gossip Girl -- and Thurston Moore hinted that he would love a role on the show. Total 90's-rock-cred!! Rufus Humphrey better watch out.

“I’d like to have a role on the show,” says Moore. “I’d love to be a 51-year-old ex-indie rocker who hangs out in some capacity. Maybe I can be kind of an art-rock nemesis to Dan Humphrey or something.”

Also, Thurston Moore and Kim Gordan are giant fans of the show. Who knew?

“Kim [Gordon] and I are pretty fanatical viewers of the show,” Thurston Moore tells Rolling Stone. “It’s sort of our dose of Shakespeare every week.”

I took advantage of yesterday's gorgeous weather and my friend Emily's invitation and hopped in her car to head across town to Broadway Backyard for a Todd P afternoon extravaganza. We got there just in time for Hot Box (Natalja from Querent and the Good Good, Mindy from Taigaa, Kelie from Cinders.)

The trio was a serious powerhouse and I think summed it up well when they thanked the "rad faces" for coming out and noted the fabulous weather and truly great venue: "this is the life, huh?"

After a short people-watching (hipster fashion: off the charts)/ not-quite-cold-enough Budweiser break, Talk Normal was on and the crowd made its way to the stage. I've got to hand it to the ladies - two intense sets on a hot summer day. I took off before Teeth Mountain and Lightning Bolt (how dare I?).

LIVE MUSIC - Britney Spears' Circus wows Big Apple

In what Entertainment Weekly called, "the rebirth of a pop icon," this week, NYC had the certain pleasure of hosting Ms. Britney Spears for 3 live performances. The event was an explosive spectacular...The 3-ring-circus-themed show started off with a leggless woman on a trampoline (you read that correctly) and continued to pull out 'freak-show' moments. All weirdness aside, we were positively impressed by Ms. Spears' performance, her kickin' looks and all the tremendous spectacle that was her 'Circus Tour'....They certainly pulled out all stops for this one. And Britney showed us a side we haven't seen since....well let's just say it's been awhile. Good job brit!

Oh, and we also picked up a couple samples of Brit's new fragrance, 'Circus Fantasy'!

What's almost more entertaining are some of the news stories that developed from the MSG series, such as this from Page Six:

THERE seems to be a double standard at Britney Spears'concerts. During Tuesday's packed show at Madison Square Garden, a spy tells Page Six that some fans were escorted from the aisles and taken into the hallway by security guards after being told they were dancing "too provocatively" at their seats. One of those yanked by guards, Sandra Ion, a Dramatics hair salon manager, said: "I guess there had been a complaint from someone in our section that our dancing was too risque. Meanwhile, Britney is onstage gyrating half-naked and singing 'Get Naked.' It was totally ridiculous. They should have just moved whoever complained instead of all of us." Ion says that guards forced her and her pals, including Amanda Lapore's stylist Harliquin, to miss three songs, and Garden management refused to reimburse them. A rep for the Garden did not return a call for comment.
